Played on an excellent sod at Ballyheigue, the winners got a dramatic last minute goal to win even though Kilmoyley looked to up to that stage to be the better side.

Kilmoyley started this game well and corner forward Sean Young had the ball in the Causeway net by the second minute. They added points in the seventh and ninth minutes with Causeway opening their scoring in between when Conor Diggins pointed to make it 1-2 to 0-1.

Barry Walsh pointed from play for Causeway to leave only a goal between them and they levelled matters in the 18th minute when Alan Whyte sent a ground shot to the net.

Cormac O’Connor put Causeway ahead for the first time in the 23rd minute with 55 metre free to make it 1-4 to 1-3. The sides were level again two minutes later when the impressive Edward Fitzgerald pointed on the run for Kilmoyley.

During the remaining five minutes of the half both sides again exchanged points. Barry Walsh put over a difficult 50 metre free while Pat Deenihan for Kilmoyley scored the best point of the match from play from over 70 metres just before the half time whistle. The sides were level at the break, 1-4 apiece.

Kilmoyley dominated the second half everywhere but on the scoreboard. Causeway had some good attacks but found it hard to breach the Kilmoyley defence, where Tom Godley and Pat Deenihan were to the fore.

Between the 40th and 47th minutes Kilmoyley shot over three points without reply. Firstly Sean Young pointed. Jason Harrington then scored the second before full forward Xavier Lovett fielded a long delivery to put over a good point.

They missed chances of further extending their lead before Causeway suddenly got back into the game.

In the 53rd minute, a high dropping ball broke to Barry Walsh who crashed a ground shot to the Kilmoyley net. Despite Kilmoyley’s dominance, Cause-way were now level, 2-4 to 1-7.

However Kilmoyley went down again and another great 60-metre point from Edward Fitzgerald restored their lead. Causeway were getting more into the game again and had a few attempts on goal without success.

In the 58th minute Kilmoyley went up two points when TJ Maunsell pointed from play and there seemed no way back for Causeway. They did force a 65, which dropped into the square but was cleared by the Kilmoyley defence.

Then as the game entered stoppage time a ball was sent in high towards the Kilmoyley goal.

It broke to Alan Whyte whose first time pull gave the goalkeeper no chance and Causeway a one point lead. The whistle sounded on the puck out to give Causeway a dramatic win, 3-4 to 1-9.

After the game the trophy was presented to the winning skipper, Daniel O’Connor by Tommy O’Connor, PRO of Bord Iom·na Chiarrai Thuaidh. This was Causeway’s first win in this competition since 1993.

Well done to Jim Cantillion, Chris Fealy and John Sheehan on this great success. Also Causeway Hurling Club wishes John O'Mahoney a speedy recovery from his injury.
